Director Sally El Hosaini's work "The Swimmer" kicked off the Toronto Film Festival, and her upcoming project "Jones" turned attention to one of the largest mass murder and suicide stories in history. She said that El Hosainy is casting a new perspective on this misunderstood story. She said she had obtained the right to life from Stephen Jones, the living son of Jim Jones. "This is a misunderstood chapter in American history," she said. "People refer to Jim Jones as a Charles Manson style character of that era, but if history had stopped in 1976/7 (before the mass murder and suicide in 1978), he would have been remembered like Martin Luther King because he was anti racism, pro LGBT, super progressive, and the most devout person. Many educated, intelligent, and progressive people signed up to participate in the People's Temple, and then everything was wrong. This is a movie about narcissism, fake news, and if you were only instilled with one narrative, what would it do to you, the ability to corrupt power. This ultimately is a Shakespearean style family drama."
